The heroic death of Charles Peguy on September 5th, 1914 was hailed as that of a "soldier-poet". In four years, the director of "les Cahier de la Quinzaine", a literary magazine, who had made a name for himself as a great polemicist with his cutting prose, had managed to gain respect as a poet. For this reason, the film includes many readings from extracts of Peguy's texts, unfortunately cut short by the laws of narration which do not allow prolonged interruptions. Peguy's prose, like his poems, reveals its meaning in its repetitive, meandering full length, with all the hammered nuances and emphatic subtleties of going back on one's steps.
